What is an SNMP MIB?

An SNMP MIB (Management Information Base) is a file that helps to identify and translate properties and sensors stored in SNMP OIDs. Most manufacturers will have publicly available MIBs for their equipment that enable users to map out the data provided by the asset. An SNMP MIB is very different from an SNMP Walk. A Walk is a collection of the data as read directly from the device. A MIB allows the translation of that data into meaningful and readable formats.

Where can you find a MIB?

There are several places that you may be able to locate a MIB for a device.

  1. From the asset's web interface - In some cases devices will contain support links or direct downloads to the latest MIB files that the device leverages. Check the device's web interface for an SNMP, documentation, or support link to download the MIB.
  2. From a public MIB repository - There are many 3rd party MIB repositories that are maintained. Some of these repositories allow users to download the MIBs directly from them. Be careful of this method as the MIB may not be the latest version.
  3. From the manufacturer/vendor - The best method of obtaining the latest MIB file is directly from the manufacturer or vendor. Use the online support features provided by them or contact your representative directly and submit a request for the latest SNMP MIB.
